Surprise, surprise...

That the Democrats won the Senate as well as the House of Representatives was something of a surprise.  As recently as November 2, the polls had control of the Senate as a toss-up.   But the bigger surprise has been Donald Trump's reaction. Unlike his belligerent refusal to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election, by early this morning he had, in effect, conceded defeat. Given his efforts to support Republican candidates in the closing stages of their campaigns and  his customary warnings about voter fraud, that was shocking.

Two possible explanations come to mind.  First, it's a ploy to disarm his opponents while he puts into motion some fiendish plan to overturn key Democratic wins.  A second is that he simply doesn't care.  Although he repeatedly said voters should imagine he was on the ballot, he wasn't. So perhaps he can rationalize away the Republican's drubbing as a rebuke for the GOP but not him personally.  Of course, that overlooks he fact that many of the candidate he personally backed lost; but motivated reasoning can do wonderful things. I hope the second explanation is nearer the truth; otherwise we could be in for another rough ride (although I doubt that MAGA has the energy or support for another January 6th moment).
